Major League Baseball and the sport’s players union on Thursday reached a tentative labor deal that may pave the way for spring training video games to start and Opening Day to happen in early April.
An individual accustomed to the matter advised CNBC that the settlement is topic to ratification. Twenty-three of MLB’s 30 owners should approve the deal. The players affiliation’s government committee and participant representatives voted to OK the settlement.
The breakthrough got here 99 days into the owner-imposed lockout of players after the sides failed to reach a brand new collective bargaining settlement. Spring training had been canceled.
The season had initially been set to start March 31. Owners canceled the start of the season final week after they could not reach a cope with players by a league-imposed deadline.
Now the season is about to start April 7, according to ESPN, which first reported the settlement. The season can be prolonged three days, and the schedule would come with a number of doubleheaders to make up for potential misplaced video games.
The sports activities information community reported that players can start to report to spring training as early as Friday. Spring training video games may start as quickly as March 8.
Wednesday evening, MLB owners had stated they’d cancel extra video games and push Opening Day till April 14, absent a deal.
